Osteoporosis; meaning 'porous bone'; is a bone disease that occurs when the body loses too much bone; makes too little bone; or both. As bones become less dense; they weaken and are more likely to break. Breaking a bone is a serious complication of osteoporosis; especially with older people. As with any specialist condition; it is important for carers to be aware of the signs; symptoms and effects of that condition so that you can fully support the person you are caring for.
