ISO 45001 Requirements

ISO 45001 specifies requirements for an occupational health and safety (OH&S) management system, and gives guidance for its use, to enable organizations to provide safe and healthy workplaces by preventing work-related injury and ill health, as well as by proactively improving its OH&S performance.

ISO 45001 will support new areas of management systems to ensure better compatibility and systems governance, making the implementation within an organization a lot smoother. Once published, the standard will apply to any organization wishing to:

• Establish and implement an internationally recognized occupational health and safety management system to reduce or minimize risks to personnel and other relevant parties
• Maintain and constantly improve their health and safety performance
• Keep all operations in line with their stated health and safety policies to an internationally recognized standard. 

ISO 45001 Manual

The ISO 45001 Manual covers macro level details of OH&S system and clause-wise details on how ISO 45001 systems are implemented. It covers the context of organization, sample policy; objectives, scope, organizations structure as well as macro level each requirement from 4 to 10 of ISO 45001 on how it is implemented in the organization. It covers OH&S 45001 documents for tier-1. It has a total of 10 chapters that cover company profile, amendment sheet, index, clause wise details as per ISO 45001 for implementation. It covers sample copy of OH&S manual and clause-wise details on how ISO 45001 systems are implemented.

ISO 45001 Documentation Requirements

Below are the documents that need to be produced if one wants to be compliant with ISO 45001 and in brackets reference to the ISO 45001 clause is given:

• Scope of the OH&S management system (clause 4.3)
• OH&S policy (clause 5.2)
• Responsibilities and authorities within OH&SMS (clause 5.3)
• OH&S process for addressing risks and opportunities (clause 6.1.1)
• Methodology and criteria for assessment of OH&S risks (clause 6.1.2.2)
• OH&S objectives and plans for achieving them (clause 6.2.2)
• Emergency preparedness and response process (clause 8.2)

Other Supporting Documents

Apart from the abovementioned list of documents, there are additional supporting documents that can be used to facilitate the operation of a management system such as:

• Procedure for determining the context of the organization and interested parties (clauses 4.1 and 4.2)
• Procedure for identification and evaluation of OH&S management system risks and opportunities (clauses 6.1.1 and 6.1.2)
• Procedure for competence, training and awareness (clauses 7.2 and 7.3)
• Procedure for communication (clause 7.4)
• Procedure for document and record control (clause 7.5)
• Procedure for internal audit (clause 9.2)
• Procedure for management review (clause 9.3)
• Procedure for management of nonconformities and corrective actions (clause 10.2)
